What is Alfa Fetoprotein, AFP ?
The Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) test measures the levels of AFP, a protein primarily produced by the liver and yolk sac of a developing fetus. In adults, AFP levels are typically low, but elevated levels may indicate certain health conditions, particularly related to the liver or reproductive organs. This test is widely used as a tumor marker to help detect and monitor specific cancers or liver diseases. In non-pregnant individuals, high AFP levels are often associated with liver cancers such as hepatocellular carcinoma, germ cell tumors, or chronic liver diseases like cirrhosis and hepatitis. In pregnant women, the AFP test is part of the maternal serum screening to evaluate the risk of fetal abnormalities, including neural tube defects or chromosomal conditions. The AFP test is commonly ordered when doctors suspect liver cancer or certain types of germ cell tumors. It is also used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for these cancers or to check for recurrence. In pregnant women, the test is performed during the second trimester as part of prenatal screening to assess fetal health and development.
